Like others, I'm strongly in the anti-grease camp.  Here and on the keyboard
both.

Also, as was mentioned earlier, the filter capacitor may be
dried up and not working we.
You could also use the silicon grease on the connector to
the rectifier as I mentione earlier or as Barry suggest, solder
the wire directly to the rectifier.
I suspect you'll find one of these three things to be a problem.
