That was the idea, but it was only partly effective, as at best you'd stil 
have a 1/256 chance of mis-identifying the disk; and in practice it was  
much lower as they were assigned by operator choice.

It would be a handy option, but in some cases it might be desirable to 
re-create the source disk exactly, including it's volume number.

I expect the serial rate itself will be the bottleneck in such a connection.

I do it now using "dump" (aka "suprdump", etc) via a console connection to 
the other machine.  But it can certainly be made more convenient!
