and of course, I should have said "1-bit", not "2-bit" in my
descripton...

I also often work off copies of the original, especially if it is bound
or fragile - it is much easier and faster to work with a copier than a
scanner on a page-by-page basis and then bulk scan the output. At 1-bit,
there is no perceptible information loss. The copiers I have access to
also allow image reduction from A size drawings or smaller, whereas my
scanner has an 8.5 x 14 inch bed. The big Heath pictorials are still a
bear and I copy/scan them in sections. Color work goes to Kinkos.

We just got a new network-connected Konica copier with the ability to
scan (via TWAIN interface)as well as copy - I'm looking forward to
trying it out in both roles later this summer.
